Ford’s Acclaimed Pinto
The Ford Pinto is still very popular for tuning with countless people.
The Pinto head has is not the same since the years it was introduced in the 1970s.If you intend to fit carburetors to the more modern heads from the injected models found on many left hand cars for sale, one will have to do some modifications to them. Using a selection of second hand cylinder head. These cylinder heads have to be cleaned of coke, oil and dirt. All old bearings are removed, check all threads for deepness and condition.
All these heads must be pressure checked at 70 PSI just to be sure they are not cracked in any way. Make sure the waterways are fully cleaned as well. Looking at the inlet port of the injection port establish sure it is totally smooth with a die grinder as they tend to get quite hot in use. This also enables new alloy stuffers to be fitted. The cylinder head should then be drilled and tapped to accommodate two 1/4 U.N.C. On these modified heads the allen bolts are used to hold the new stuffers in. The valve guides are re machined to get the most outstanding angle to help flow. Also the stud holes are normally filled in and re-drilled a slight further to aid new studs. This enables the standard two litre inlet manifold gasket and manifold shape to fit the modified parts.combustion chambers should now be polished, balanced and blended into the new valve seats. A considerably modified pinto head should flow well over 190cfm. This will include fitting larger valves and doing some work on the exhaust valves and chambers to increase the gas flow rate. The inlet valve side will only need increasing if you intend to fit larger valves. The short side bend has to have good high lift flow to achieve good results. This is an important area to get right as getting the shape wrong could loose a lot of power.
If you want big gains from your Pinto engine, just like a used mini head, getting the race heads modified professionally is very crucial. A great porportion of money ought to be spent on the head of the Pinto to get it modified correctly. Valves are 42mm inlet, 36mm exhaust as standard.
The standard exhaust valve is big enough and there is little point in fitting larger ones for road use. Considerably bigger inlet valves can be good, so budget on getting the head modified properly.Standard valves are 42mm inlet and 36mm exhaust. The standard exhaust valves are said to be good even for many race applications. However much larger inlet valves are considered great if you are building a full out and out race car.
